Top 10 Party Games for 2013

Christmas is coming;  it’s a great time to know about the 10 party games for 2013 that are highly rated and sure to please so that you can grab one while they’re still available. At our house we have a Thanksgiving tradition that after dinner and clean up we play a lively and mostly friendly game of [easyazon_link asin=”B00112CHCK” locale=”US” new_window=”yes” tag=”silvamindpowe-20″ add_to_cart=”yes” cloaking=”yes” localization=”yes” nofollow=”yes” popups=”default”]Apples to Apples Party Box – The Game of Hilarious Comparisons (Family Edition)[/easyazon_link]. Other than stuffing ourselves with turkey and pumpkin pie, it’s the most memorable part of the day.  This year, I bought [easyazon_link asin=”B004S8F7QM” locale=”US” new_window=”default” tag=”silvamindpowe-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” nofollow=”default” popups=”default”]Cards Against Humanity[/easyazon_link]. That game looks to be a lot of fun, although it can be a bit raunchy so it really is for adults only.  Many of these games can be played by the whole family.

10. [easyazon_link asin=”B0009Z3J6S” locale=”US” new_window=”default” tag=”silvamindpowe-20″ add_to_cart=”no” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” nofollow=”default” popups=”no”]I’ve Never Board Game Adult Version[/easyazon_link] Be careful with this one; it’s a drinking game and if you aren’t playing with at least 5 other people, I've Never Board Gameyou’d better have a designated driver.  You could probably play with quarters or something if you;re not into the drinking scene.  Some of the questions may be offensive and you may want to carefully consider whether you want to play this game with your parents or kids.

“The first time I played this game was with my co-workers at Happy Hour and then again with my family members on our summer vacation at the beach house. Although we were already close and “thought” we knew a lot about each other-this game only made us closer. I don’t remember laughing as hard as I did once secrets started to become revealed. The next morning at breakfast, no one could even make eye contact without laughing! This game is perfect to play with a group of friends or family and will keep you laughing all the way through! It would make a perfect holiday gift-I highly recommend purchasing this game if you are up for some laughs!”

“If you’re looking for that one “adults only” party game that really pushes the boundaries without pushing it over the edge, this is the game to get. Where Loaded Questions really relies on a level of unknown between the players, this one is great even if you’re close friends; and it can be easily tailored to the comfort level of the group (which changes quickly, since it’s a drinking game). Educational? It seemed like it was almost impossible to walk away from it without knowing more about the people you’re playing with. It’s a great ice breaker, and once you get started even lets people who don’t normally open up feel free to have a good time. The only complaint would be that you need to relax the drinking requirements a bit, since it doesn’t pull punches on the amounts it calls for… you’d have to be a pro to get all the way through the game. Tailor the rules for your group a bit, keep an open mind, and this is the best party game I’ve played.”

Board Game[/easyazon_link] Stimulate your brain, challenge your skills of deduction, and have fun trying to guess what players are up to! You'll Never Guess This game reminds me of 20 questions.  It’s a relatively new game with only four reviews on Amazon, but don’t let that dissuade you, it’s tremendous fun!

“This is a really fun game. My whole family enjoyed playing it over the holidays. It is great because you decide the questions to pose to the person holding the card, who in turn might be pretending to be eating something (whatever it says on the card). You have to find out what that is. The cards often have some pretty funny scenarios to play out, like What Type of Movie Did I Star In? I had the role of Presenter Host for that topic and my daughter eventually figured it out. The clues you get from time to time (letters in the answer) help too. I like games like this one that make you the center of the activity. Do not expect a quiet evening with this game, just a good deal of fun.”

[easyazon_cta add_to_cart=”default” align=”center” asin=”B00A3UBTJS” cloaking=”default” height=”28″ key=”wide-orange” localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” tag=”silvamindpowe-20″ width=”176″]

8. [easyazon_link asin=”B000809NNC” locale=”US” new_window=”default” tag=”silvamindpowe-20″ add_to_cart=”no” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” nofollow=”default” popups=”no”]Wits & Wagers[/easyazon_link] touts itself to be “History’s most award winning party game.” I personally have never played the game, but it has a lot of people singing its praises. Wits & Wagers is the trivia game that levels the playing field for those who can’t abide trivia games. Even a child can play this and win. The skill comes more from making smart bets than answering correctly. Wits and Wagers Gameplay is for ages 10+ and 3 to 7 players. You don’t need to know all the answers, you just need to guess well after everyone has given theirs. Allows kids to play with intelligent adults and still have a fighting chance.

“I received Wits & Wagers as a gift last year and have since given it to four different friends. People love this game. It’s fast (everyone answers each question), fun (lots of interaction – you’re betting on your friend’s guesses) and easy to play (the rules sound complicated, but they are not). Besides a few date/year questions, it’s pretty hard to embarrass yourself and the gambling levels the playing field. The way the game is structured (with a no limit final round), almost everyone is in it until the end too. Unlike some other trivia games, this one lends itself to mixed crowds of trivia buffs and children. Knowing lots of trivia really won’t help you all that much, as smart bets are the key. I highly recommend this award winning game!”

“Great game! You can show off your knowledge of trivia or just bet on the player you think knows the answer. A round can be played in under fifteen minutes. It’s a great conversation starter – we spread it out at our favorite Brooklyn bar and soon had everyone joining in.”

“This is a game that is easy to learn and great for families and parties. It is a trivia game, but that description does not do it justice. The betting element in the game takes the amount of fun of a normal trivia game and multiplies it by 100. Even if you don’t know the answer, you can still do well if you can guess who does know the answer. This opens up lots of interesting possibilities for strategy, such as bluffing, playing the odds, seeing how well you know your opponents, etc. I am not exaggerating when I say that every family should own this game. It is by far the best trivia game I have ever played, and one of the best party games I have ever played. Also, the makers of the game have great customer service. Hey, are you still reading this? Buy it already!”

7. [easyazon_link asin=”B00A3U895K” locale=”US” new_window=”default” tag=”silvamindpowe-20″ add_to_cart=”no” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” nofollow=”default” popups=”no”]MATTER OF FACT – The Trivia Challenge Game[/easyazon_link] is a trivia challenge game for 2 or more players/teams with players ages 16+.Matter of Fact  It’s trivia with a whole new twist! This game moves quickly and has challenging questions. If you have a large group playing, you will need to play in teams.

“I’ll go on the record as saying that, in my opinion, this new trivia game will become a classic before too long. It has all the right elements. The first night I played it, it actually turned into a mini-marathon as everyone wanted to just keep playing, game after game. If you are well-rounded in terms of knowledge and trivia, step right up. If less so, just make sure you have the right teammates. The Question List format is a stroke of inspiration for those who like to see how well they do over a series of questions, not just one. Inevitably, just when you finish going through one set, you will be clamoring to get to your next card. This must have been a labor of love to produce, because the trivia areas are cleverly thought out and the multi-themed questions joined together perfectly.”

“This game is recommended for age 16 to adult. The reason is the eras the trivia type questions cover. We played twice (a total of six games) in three player format. The instructions recommend two players or teams so everyone is always actively engaged in the questioning and answering. We didn’t have any problem playing as a threesome and reading the questions round robin style. It was still enjoyable to listen to the other player answer their seven questions, so I think this instruction could be offputting for someone thinking of buying. Don’t let that deter you. The nice thing about the game is that you can’t choose your topics like you do with Trivial Pursuit. The benefit of this is that players of various levels of experience and intellect can still have a chance to win. Each card has a main question and then the player answers seven questions relating to that. You can pass twice during each game, getting a new set of questions to answer (you don’t lose your turn).
The downside to the game is some of the cards had incredibly easy questions (particularly the movie questions) and some were definitely challenging. I wish the difficulty level would have been more consistent. Also, I wish the question cards had more diversity in subjects. The three of us began to get quite a few cards where we correctly answered all seven questions and moved the maximum number of spaces. We rarely went backwards, as you can do if you only answer one or two correctly. The result of this was that the games were begun and ended rather quickly…an advantage or disadvantage depending on your perspective. The board is small and we finished one game in twenty minutes. We enjoyed it overall.”

It pits a small group of resistance fighters The Resistance against a powerful and corrupt government. The resistance has launched a series of bold and daring missions to bring the governement to its knees. Unfortunately spies have infiltrated the resistance ranks, ready to sabotage the carefully crafted plans. Even a single spy can take down a resistance mission team, choose your teams carefully or forever lose your chance for freedom.

“Oh my god, you’re a spy, aren’t you?”
“No, YOU’RE the spy!!”
“Don’t listen to him – he’s a spy!”
“That’s exactly the kind of thing a SPY would say.”

“That’s what your evening will sound like when you play The Resistance, but with more shouting and far more colorful language. With or without adult beverages, there are few better ways to spend an evening with 5-10 players. You’ll either be a spy, sabotaging missions, lying to your friends’ faces, and planting seeds of dissent amongst the group; or one of the Resistance, the good guys, trying to figure out who to trust, who’s a spy, and finding out at the end of the game that you were being played all along, by someone you had NO IDEA was so capable of such deception. The Resistance is super-inexpensive for the amount of fun you’ll have with it, and the 2nd Edition components are a huge upgrade over the original. The rules avoid the unfortunate player-elimination mechanic of Mafia/Werewolf, while adding more deductive reasoning and strategy. You will want to play it over and over and over again, if only for a chance to be one of the bad guys next round. Don’t even bother with the (free, included) expansion cards and rules. There’s nothing wrong with them, and it’s awesome that they’re included in this package, but you simply don’t need them. The game is all about the social interaction, the deception, the paranoia, and the agony of defeat which is immediately replaced by the need to start a new game.

Buy this game now. Buy it for yourself, and for every friend or relative who likes games but has never heard of a party game beyond charades or Apples to Apples. There are a ton of truly great games for smaller groups of players, but for the 5-10 player range, nothing even comes close to The Resistance.”

It’s part of a newly emerging category of games known as “co-operative games. Instead of players playing against each other, they play together to achieve an objective. Each player is dealt an Adventure Card and given a corresponding pawn before the game starts, designating him or her with a certain set of strengths. This game is designed so that instead of competing with other players, you work to find the treasures and find out how to best use each Adventurer’s strengths through collaborative play. This stimulates problem-solving and strategy skills.

“I purchase this for my children (7 & 8). They love the game. There is some role play, some strategy, some team work and some mental challenge. It’s a game the whole family can play and a refreshing change from the usual video games!”

“This is a very cool and slick game. The greatness of this game is that every player is working against the “house.” It is a team building game that drives everyone to think several steps ahead. The goal is, as a team, to beat the island. My wife and daughter (10 years old) play it weekly. It gets exciting as we are try to move around the island and strategize how to keep from sinking. We have given this game as a gift several times and all who receive it/play it enjoy it.”

“Game nights often lead to a kid crying when they lose. Not anymore! This is a group cooperative game requiring everyone to work together to get off the island with the treasure! We have played with 2, 3, and 4 people…it’s fun all ways. We have lost a few times. But now we know how to think ahead to what each of us must do to succeed and we win more and more often. Highly recommend this game. The crying kid doesn’t happen with this game…in fact, this child really enjoys and is getting better at thinking ahead and of others. Awesome game, get it!”

Spot It Party GameThe first thing to know about Spot it! is that there is always one, and only one, matching symbol between any two cards. Got it? Now all you need is a sharp eye and a quick hand to play all five party games packed into the grab ‘n’ go tin. Including up to eight players, Spot it! is a cinch to learn, plays fast, and is irresistibly fun for all ages! With 15 awards to its name, Spot it! has won the hearts of kids as well as adults. The versatile and skill-building game has also caught the attention of educators and therapists, who praise it for honing kids’ perceptual abilities, attention, and speech-language skills. Not many people can deny the appeal of this game. A group of college kids will get the same kick out of it as grandparents and young kids. Furthermore, the durable little tin that holds the cards makes Spot it! the perfect travel game and boredom buster. You just can’t go wrong with Spot it!

“We love this little easy to store game. All ages are playing it from us parents, college students and teens to even the special boy who visits often. We love it. And there are so many different versions to play in just one can. Great game- loads of competitive fun.”

“This is the second one I’ve bought, I gave the first one away to a family who borrowed it and loved it. It is harder than it looks and there is more than one way to play. Spot It is spot on:)”

“This is a very fast-paced game that is extremely easy to learn. One of the many nice things about it is, older people do not have an advantage over younger, as is the case in many games. You just try to spot a matching item on your card and the face card as fast as you can. I love the tin can that makes it easy to stick in a purse and bring along for times we have to wait, such as at a doctor appointment. It’s funny that it says for ages 7-12, because we’ve played with people in their 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s, and all of them have loved it as much as our seven year old! Lots of fun for everyone!”

It has a little bit of a learning curve, but after about 30 minutes you really get the hang of it and then you enjoy it. The board tiles and resource cards are beautifully designed, and the random element of the board makes the game different every time. Definitely worth the money!

“I was introduced to Settlers last summer by one of my friends. I was an uninterested bystander during TV commercials the first time I saw Settlers played. By the second game, I wasn’t watching the TV anymore. By the third game, I was playing. Settlers is infectious. It spreads. That one friend who introduced me to the game has spawned a few dozen converts (dedicated enough to buy the game for themselves) in only a years time. Most of us had to get the game off of ebay since it was out of production until recently. No two games are alike, which keeps the game fresh. Game play varies, and strategies that work for one board don’t work for others. This game is a must for anyone who enjoys sitting down with friends and family.”

“Settler’s of Catan is a staple in our family. It is unique in that the board changes every time so your strategy must too. We took it to our larger family beach vacation and everyone who took the time to learn it, loved it. I encourage you to get online and explore the variations – including suggestions for playing with only two players. This is a must-have game for game-lovers, can’t say enough about it. Our 8 year old is quite good at it!”

It’s one of the most popular specialty games of all time and takes only 30-60 minutes to play which is a big advantage if you have limited time.  The objective of [easyazon_link asin=”0975277324″ locale=”US” new_window=”default” tag=”silvamindpowe-20″ add_to_cart=”no” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” nofollow=”default” popups=”no”]Ticket To Ride[/easyazon_link] is to visit the most cities in North America in seven days.

“One of the best board games around (if you ask me), fun to play with up to 5 players. Once you get the hang of it, its hard to stop playing.”

“I love this game. It is not that difficult or challenging and I don’t care about winning, but I absolutely find addicting the feeling of completing each of my routes. I guess because my life is so full of things that are hard to complete. I have a group of friends who are as addicted as I am, and we will play for several hours a couple times a week and still want more.”

“I don’t think I have ever seen a board game that pleases more consistently than this one. In my experience, board games are typically tedious to explain, and boring. Not this game. The beauty of it is its simplicity. It can be picked up very quickly, and the gameplay is quick, with no lulls. But, for all that simplicity in the gameplay, you do not sacrifice any complexity in the strategy. There are several different strategies that you can use. You can play defense and try to obstruct your opponent, or ignore your opponent all together and just focus on getting points. You can try to string together as many short runs as possible, or go for one long run.The other beauty of this game is that it can be played by two players or more, and is just as fun. Most board games really can’t handle two players well, but my wife and I have played this game at parties and with just the two of us, and it is always just as fun.

The game comes with a fantastic looking huge board. Every piece that is included, from the trains to the cards, are high quality and look great.Easily my favorite board game. I am looking forward of trying out the expansions.”

Here are just a few quotes from people who have played Cards Against Humanity:

“This game is just funny as hell! I was told about this game from a friend and now we play it all the time we have company over.”

“I bought this as a wedding gift and out of all the gifts that they received this was their favorite!”

“You’ve played Apples to Apples. Do you find that you have the most fun when pairing cards in a horribly offensive way? Like, really really non-PC? If so, you’ll quite literally cry from laughter while playing this game. Seriously, it’s the most fun I’ve ever gotten from a game. No contest.”
